WHAT IS DELTA E?

Delta E (ΔE) is the industry-standard metric for measuring how different two colors look to the human eye. Here is how it works and why Toon Tone uses it.

Delta E (ΔE) is a metric that measures the perceptual difference between two colors in CIELAB color space. A Delta E of 0 means the colors are identical. Higher values mean the colors look more different to the human eye. It is the standard used by professional designers, printers, and display manufacturers worldwide.

THE FORMULA

ΔE = √((L₁−L₂)² + (a₁−a₂)² + (b₁−b₂)²)

Euclidean distance between two colors in CIELAB color space.

WHAT THE NUMBERS MEAN

ΔE < 1

Imperceptible

The human eye cannot distinguish the two colors.

ΔE 1–2

Barely noticeable

Only trained observers can tell the difference.

ΔE 2–5

Noticeable with effort

You can see the difference if you look closely.

ΔE 5–10

Clearly different

Most people can see the difference easily.

ΔE 10–25

Obviously different

The colors are clearly not the same.

ΔE > 25

Completely different

The colors are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

HOW TOON TONE USES DELTA E

Points = max(0, 10000 × (1 − ΔE/50)) × Confidence

Perfect match (ΔE=0) = 10,000 points. ΔE≥50 = 0 points.

In Toon Tone, a cartoon character color flashes on screen for 3 seconds. You recreate it using a color wheel. The game calculates the Delta E between your pick and the original color, then converts it to points. Lower ΔE = closer match = higher score.

Key Facts

What it is:
Delta E (ΔE) is the industry-standard metric for perceptual color difference in CIELAB color space.
Formula:
ΔE = √((L1-L2)² + (a1-a2)² + (b1-b2)²) — Euclidean distance in CIELAB.
Perfect score:
ΔE = 0 means identical colors. In Toon Tone, that gives 10,000 points.
Excellent match:
ΔE < 5 is barely perceptible — that is Master rank territory in Toon Tone.
Industry use:
Used by designers, printers, display manufacturers, and color scientists worldwide.
In Toon Tone:
Points = max(0, 10000 × (1 − ΔE/50)) × Confidence multiplier (×1, ×1.5, or ×2).

DELTA E FAQ

What is a good Delta E score in Toon Tone?

A Delta E under 5 is excellent (barely noticeable). Under 10 is good. Under 15 is average. Above 25 means clearly different colors.

Why does Toon Tone use Delta E?

Delta E is the industry standard for color accuracy. It reflects how humans actually perceive color differences, making it the fairest scoring method.

How do I get a low Delta E score?

Focus on hue first, then saturation and brightness. Use a color-accurate monitor. Practice regularly in Quick mode.

Is Delta E the same as color difference?

Yes. Delta E (ΔE) is the standard metric for color difference. A value of 0 means identical colors.
