HOW SCORING WORKS
Toon Tone uses CIELAB Delta E — the same color difference formula used by professional designers and color scientists. Here\'s exactly how your score is calculated.
THE SCORING FORMULA
Points = (1 − ΔE ÷ 50) × 10,000 × Confidence
ΔE is the color difference in CIELAB color space. Lower ΔE = closer match = more points.
COLOR DIFFERENCE (ΔE)
After you pick a color, we calculate the Delta E — the perceptual color difference between the target and your pick in CIELAB space.
RAW SCORE
The raw score is max(0, 10000 × (1 − ΔE/50)). Perfect match (ΔE=0) = 10,000 points. ΔE≥50 = 0 points.
CONFIDENCE BONUS
Choose Safe (×1), Risky (×1.5), or Gamble (×2). Higher confidence = bigger reward if you're close.
WHAT IS ΔE?
Delta E measures how different two colors look to the human eye. It\'s the industry standard used by designers, printers, and color scientists worldwide.
ΔE < 3
Imperceptible
Barely even experts can tell
~9,400+ pts
ΔE 3–8
Noticeable
Trained eyes catch it
~8,400+ pts
ΔE 8–15
Obvious
Most people see the difference
~7,000+ pts
ΔE > 15
Very Different
Clearly different colors
~<7,000 pts
RANK TIERS

WHO SHOULD CARE ABOUT SCORING?
✅ Great For
- •Competitive players who want to climb from Bronze to Master rank
- •Designers tracking their color perception improvement over time
- •Players who want to understand the confidence multiplier risk/reward
- •Anyone curious about how CIELAB color science works in practice
❌ Not Ideal For
- •Casual players who just want to match colors for fun (don't stress about ΔE)
- •People looking for a clinical color vision assessment
SCORING FAQ
What is a good Delta E score?
Under 5 is excellent (Master level). Under 10 is good. Under 15 is average. Above 25 means the colors are clearly different.
What does the confidence multiplier do?
Safe (×1), Risky (×1.5), or Gamble (×2) multiplies your points. No penalty for guessing wrong — you just get the base score.
How do I reach Master rank?
Maintain an average ΔE of 5 or lower across all Classic mode rounds. That means consistently matching colors within a barely-perceptible difference.
Is scoring the same in all modes?
The base formula is always max(0, 10000 × (1 − ΔE/50)). Confidence multiplier applies in Classic, Daily, and Lightning. Quick mode uses multiple choice.
SCORING LIMITATIONS
- ⚠️ΔE is perceptual — two monitors may show the same color differently, affecting your score.
- ⚠️The formula uses CIE76 ΔE for speed. More accurate formulas (CIEDE2000) exist but are slower to compute.
- ⚠️Rank is based on average ΔE, not total games played. Fewer games = more volatile rank.
Key Facts
- Scoring formula:
- Points = max(0, 10000 × (1 − ΔE/50)) × Confidence. Perfect match (ΔE=0) = 10,000 points.
- Color metric:
- CIELAB Delta E (CIE76) — industry standard for perceptual color difference.
- Confidence levels:
- Safe (×1), Risky (×1.5), Gamble (×2). No penalty for wrong confidence.
- Rank thresholds:
- Master ≤5, Diamond ≤10, Platinum ≤15, Gold ≤20, Silver ≤25, Bronze >25
- Best for:
- Players who want to track and improve their color perception accuracy over time

TIPS TO IMPROVE
Memorize the hue first
Focus on the dominant color family (red, blue, green) before details.
Pay attention to brightness
Light vs dark makes a huge difference in ΔE. Don't pick too bright or too dark.
Use the Safe confidence
Start with Safe (×1) until you're consistently scoring above 70% accuracy.
Practice in Quick mode
5 rounds, 4 choices — fast practice to train your color intuition.
